Even before the concept of energy efficient and ?green? building became popular, CRN was using architectural and services design concepts to decrease consumption of power and minimize disturbance to natural systems.

Thermal Energy Storage System

Most of the power consumed in a building is due to the air conditioning system. The thermal energy storage systems works on the principal chilling/cooling a conducting medium during off-peak hours and discharging the same during the peak use hours, thereby avoiding running the chillers during peak hours, when the consumption is otherwise at its maximum. This has added benefits with dual tariff when electrical power is cheaper at night. We have used this system successfully in several projects like Tidel Park, TCS (Siruseri), Chennai Trade Center (Chennai) and Ebene Cyber city, Mauritius.

Design based on orientation and planning that allows for maximum daylight into the interior spaces. This allows limited use of artificial lights during the day. The lighting systems are also linked to access control systems so that the lights in only the occupied areas work and not those in the unoccupied areas. This is an energy saving operation concept.

Commissioning agents

CRN was the commissioning agent for the first platinum rated green building in India ? CII Godrej Green Business Centre The firms role was to assess and certify that the building practices were in compliance to the requirements of LEED, which is the US- based certifying agency.

Water Conservation

While rain water harvesting is a statutory requirement in some states, we at CRN follow practices to conserve and reuse water in all our projects. An example is the recycling of treated water reclaimed from the sewerage for the water cooled HVAC chillers in TCS, Sholingalnallur or the use of treated water in the flushing system at Cognizant, Thoraipakkam. The balance recycled water is used for landscaping creating a zero discharge system and solid wastes from the system are organic in nature and suitable for use as fertilizer.
