Introduction and Site Analysis: The main approach to the site is from the west side arterial road of the Special Economic Zone (SEZ). The SEZ is just off a main corridor of development in southern Chennai i.e. Old Mahabalipuram Road (OMR). The site is part of reclaimed land and is surrounded by other similar SEZ developments. The Wipro campus and other campuses along with housing and commercial developments in surrounding areas intends to give impetus to development in this area. This campus will rank as one of the largest campuses of Wipro and host important Offshore Development Centres (ODC) or Software Development Blocks (SDB). The Master Plan and its Buildings intend to house 25,000 employees in a 80 acre campus having Software Blocks, Cafeteria, Learning Centre, Customer Care Centre and Guest Block, making it self sufficient for the employees. The total built up area is more than 3 million SFT. Master Plan and Architecture Concepts Master Plan principles: An east west axis forms the main backbone in the layout of built forms and open spaces. The two ends of the axis are occupied by the Administrative-Entry Block on the west and culminates in the Learning Centre – Customer Care Centre on the east. The master plan and architecture thus underlines and ties in with the commitment that Wipro has towards the Customer and employee training and development. Buildings are laid out symmetrically about the axis to give a simple rationality and legibility to the Architecture. Zones of Development: The axis is punctuated by clusters of buildings arranged around landscaped open spaces. The first cluster on the west is occupied by Hi-rise Software Development Blocks (SDB) arranged in a radial manner around a circular landscaped area. This also forms the first impressions of the campus for the visitor and user alike. The second cluster is arranged around a water body and has the common amenities such as the Cafeteria, Learning centre, Customer care centre and SDB. The third zone of development branch of and are primarily occupied by SDBs. The cluster on the south is set apart for future development. Hierarchy of Spaces: Continuing in the same grain, the relationship of open spaces and its surrounding built forms follows a hierarchy of scale and significance in accordance with the Zones of Development. The circular open space on the west i.e. the first cluster occupies with its centrality and symmetry underlines its importance in the development. The clusters have a relationship as they are interlinked physically and with the landscape. The character of the buildings also forms a unifying element. Vistas keep constantly changing between the clusters.
